COMBURA 2010
The COMBURA symposium is the major annual event in The Netherlands for exchange of information on combustion research and its applications. It is a joint initiative of the Technology Foundation STW (Platform Clean and Efficient Combustion), the Nederlandse Vlam Vereniging NVV (Dutch section of the International Flame Research Foundation IFRF) and the Dutch section of the Combustion Institute. COMBURA 2010 is sponsored by KIVI NIRIA, section Energy and Heat Technology.
This year the COMBURA symposium will be organised for the 9th time. Participants are expected from universities, research institutes and industrial companies in The Netherlands and the surrounding countries. At the symposium recent developments in advanced combustion research with a clear focus on the potential for application in industry will be presented. Further the symposium is an excellent opportunity to expand your personal network.
This 9th COMBURA symposium will last two full days. The first day will be fully devoted to the 8 research projects within the STSTW program on Clean Combustion Concepts (CCC). This research program was granted in December 2008. In the course of 2009 most of the PhD positions were filled. The first results from these projects on promising future combustion concepts will be highlighted and discussed during the meeting. Industrial members of CCC Users’ Committees are especially welcomed to participate this first day.
On the second day of the symposium the format is as usual with two keynote lectures, two parallel sessions and contributions from researchers in the field of combustion. A central theme of this second day will be fuel flexibility, an important issue with the introduction of biofuels in industrial processes. Two sessions will be organized with contributions on this theme, and one of the keynote lectures will be devoted to this topic.
Joris Thijssen, Greenpeace, will open the second day of the symposium with a keynote about the Carbon Footprint. Joris Thijssen is a passionate campaigner against global warming and climate change. During the Copenhagen climate summit in December 2009 he spent 3 weeks in jail after a protest at the banquet for Heads of State. Joris Thijssen studied aerospace engineering at Delft University of Technology.
Dr. Andrew Harrison, Shell Technology Centre Thornton, will close the symposium with a keynote on Future Fuels. Andrew Harrison has global responsibility for Shells longer term fuels research and technology development. He has a background in combustion chemistry and has worked in diverse technical and managerial roles related to fuels and lubricants for over 25 years.
At the symposium the NVV Combustion Award for the best Master Thesis in the area of combustion technology will be presented and the winner will give a lecture.
In the poster session ‘Work in Progress’ new research results will be presented. The best three posters will be rewarded with the Combustion Institute Poster Prize.
